Alex Hitchcock Quartet
Alex Hitchcock (tenor) Will Barry (piano)
Fergus Ireland (bass) Shane Forbes (drums)
Tenorist Alex Hitchcock has previously performed at the club with funk combo Resolution 88 (due to return in February 2020) but this evening we're delighted to welcome him back with his own exciting new quartet as part of their UK winter tour.
Described by Jazzwise as part of "the shape of jazz to come" in both 2018 and 2019, Alex is joined by three of the UK’s most acclaimed improvising musicians in Will Barry, Fergus Ireland and Shane Forbes. The group won the prestigious Peter Whittingham Jazz Award in 2018 and they're debuting all-new material during the course of the current tour.
The quartet plays original music that is firmly rooted in the jazz tradition but the powerhouse rhythm section is unafraid to take the music in bold new directions. Expect driving contemporary swing as well as propulsive grooves and virtuosic soloing.
"Incredible young lion of the tenor sax" – GARETH LOCKRANE
"Sax virtuoso" – JAZZWISE
"A fantastic talent... undoubtedly one of the stars of the future" – Helen Mayhew, JAZZ FM
"Hitchcock blows contemporary post-Coltrane tenor soaring up into the outer limits" – BEBOP SPOKEN HERE

O'Higgins & Luft play Monk & Trane
Dave O' Higgins (tenor)
Rob Luft (guitar)
Scott Flanigan (organ)
Rod Youngs (drums)
One of the final concerts of their substantial 40-date autumn tour, Norwich Jazz Club welcomes this amazing quartet headed up by Dave and Rob as they promote their new CD "O'Higgins & Luft play Monk and Trane" (Ubuntu Music 2019).
The repertoire will be made up of Thelonious Monk compositions (expect some rarely heard ones!) and tunes played by John Coltrane with especial reference to his choice of standards and various collaborations in the 1950s. Both Monk and Trane were "modernists" but also steeped in swing and the rich tradition of the beboppers. Dave and Rob intend to respect this lineage whilst putting their own mark on it. Expect some swing, fun, grooves and moods from this exciting new collaboration.
